Like a car, there are small things that each person should do to keep their PC in top shape. When you are experiencing FPS issues, tuning up your system is one of the easiest ways to increase performance. Many of these tasks can be performed through free software packages.
PLEASE NOTE: The recommended 3rd party software in this guide was created by (and is maintained by) 3rd Party Companies that are not associated with Riot Games. Therefore, Riot Games cannot be held responsible for use of any of these programs. This is not meant to scare you away from the software – we just want you to know that we are not the makers of the 3rd party programs listed below and therefore do not endorse or support them any official capacity.
Update your video card drivers - this is the most common solution to FPS problems:
Manufacturers of video and graphics cards frequently release bug fixes and optimizations for their cards. These optimizations come in the form of drivers which you can download from the manufacturer. (You can find a guide to video card drivershere). Getting the most up-to-date drivers for your graphics/video card is the most important thing to you can do to improve your frame-rate.
Change game settings - this is the second most common solution to FPS problems:
The Video Options you choose in-game have a large effect on your FPS. By selecting less complicated video rendering options you can improve your FPS. To access these options once in-game press ESC and select "Video":
You can view a detailed description of these settings at the bottom of this guide.
Settings for best performance:
Settings: Custom. Resolution: Match desktop resolution. Character Quality: Very Low. Environment Quality: Very Low. Effects Quality: Very Low. Shadows: No Shadow. Frame Rate Cap: Benchmark, 25 FPS or Stable (depending on hardware). Wait for Vertical Sync: Unchecked or Checked (depending on hardware).
To easily and quickly set these options, replace your game.cfg file from the following folder, with the attached game.cfg file at the bottom of this article:
C:\Riot Games\League of Legends\Config
Disable Aero [Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 Users]:
Malware builds up on players’ systems. Unfortunately, it is usually installed without your permission and is intended to steal personal data. There are many free scanners available on the internet for home use that effectively remove malware. Although we have no affiliation and can't be held responsible for the software we do recommend one of these free programs known as Malware Bytes: http://www.malwarebytes.org/
It is also recommended that you consider removing software such as Microsoft Security Essentials or Spybot Search and Destroy. These applications do remove malware but also have a real-time protection component that slows down many systems. It is fairly common that these programs will end up doing more harm than good.
Uninstall unused programs:
Many of us install programs to either try them out or use them for a specific purpose, but most of us also forget to later remove programs that we never ended up using. Please take the time to go through your Add/Remove program list to remove any unwanted or unused programs. Doing so will free up more system resources for the game to use.
Nvidia comes with the Nvidia Control Panel and ATI comes with the Catalyst Control Center. Both of these programs allow users to set up graphics profiles that can sometimes interfere with the frames per second in League of Legends. This can occur sometimes after a driver update or Windows Update. Please read this guide to learn how to return them to the proper settings:
Every PC has a limited number of resources. Each program takes up RAM and CPU time. If you have many programs running they will use resources that could otherwise be used by League of Legends to speed up the game.
Browsers: Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome
Chat programs (especially video chat): Skype, MSN Messenger
Bloat ware: This is software installed on your computer by default alongside other programs (such as TeaTimer – which is installed with Spybot Search and Destroy). Most of it provides no value and simply consumes resources.
Check for heat issues:
Does League of Legends work fine for a game or two and then start to slow down? If this is the case, your graphics card is probably overheating. There are a few things you can do to make sure you graphics card does not overheat.
Buy a laptop cooler. These can be purchased for about $20 at your nearest computer supply shop. They are simply external fans that can be plugged into a wall outlet or USB drive depending on the model. They are very effective at keeping laptops cool.
Clean any vents or fans with compressed air. Computers often get their fans clogged with dust, dirt and hair. Cleaning your computer's vents and fans will improve airflow and keep your machine at a lower temperature.
Repairing corrupt game files
Occasionally, FPS problems can be caused when certain game files become corrupt. For this reason, using the repair function in the Game Client’s Patcher is a good idea if you begin to experience problems with the in-game FPS.
To run the repair function:
Run League of Legends.
Click on the button with a gear near the top of the window.
Wait. The repair function can take anywhere from 5 minutes to over 30 depending on the number of corrupt files it has to repair.
Disable all in-game sounds
If you are still having FPS issues after the above solution, you may experience a performance boost by disabling your in-game sounds. You can do this through the Sound menu, by clicking the "Disable all Sound" box.
